New Season Coming Up

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

I’ve been very busy with other things but have not forgotten the upcoming tropical season.

I visited the Storm2010 web site to see what was new and ran into these two articles:

Hurricane Center to post warnings sooner

Because the NHC has become so much more proficient in track forecasting of tropical weather the last few years, they have decided to issue warnings and watches up to twelve hours earlier than in the past. This will be very useful for millions of coastal residents.

Hurricane Team: 2010 to be above average

OK, so what does “above average” mean? They forecast the same thing last year, and because of El Nino, the season was far weaker than any I remember. This year, the team forecasts that the current El Nino event will be easing into La Nina, so the risk of tropical weather will increase.

But they are hedging their bets by using ranges rather than hard numbers. Last year’s failure must have been a humbling experience. As always, I say to heed their forecast, but be skeptical. Don’t jump to conclusions until the season is upon us. We have about eleven weeks before it starts.
