Anti-cyclonic

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

No, this isn’t a protest against cyclonics, but to advise that the storm system I pointed out on Tuesday has begun to spin counter-clockwise around a common center. The center seems to be at the Alabama/Georgia border, around 500 miles northwest of us. It’s a fairly large system, influencing weather all the way off our coast.

The system will bring us a lot of random weather over the next few days, with periods of partly sunny skies mixed in with bands of heavy rain and some thunderstorms. I see a 40 percent chance of rain on Saturday, so maybe Weather Won’t Permit.

There are now three tropical waves, which is about average. Nothing to worry about on that (weather) front just yet, although I am keeping an eye on the northeastern Gulf.

Weather Permits

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

I’ve been keeping an eye on the gathering rain clouds all day, and so far they have gathered in places other than St. Simons Island. So, I’ll say that Weather Permits.

See you at the meeting!

Another Chance

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Upon visiting the NHC’s web site tonite, I see that a broad area of low pressure has formed about 170 miles south of Pensacola, FL. There is a 40 percent chance that this low will form into a tropical depression before crossing the Florida coast sometime tomorrow.

As of the 8 PM this evening, the low was moving northward, but I don’t know how quickly or in which direction it is moving now. The low has a pressure of 1007 MB. If necessary, a Hurricane Hunter aircraft will investigate the area late tomorrow morning.

It’s quite obvious that this low is having a very broad effect. The rain we are receiving tonite, and the rain that canceled the STS-125 landing this morning (and probably tomorrow morning, too) is all part of the same system.

BTW, I’m thinking of canceling the Weather Permitting meeting tomorrow night. There is a 78 percent chance of rain during the meeting time, and it’s very uncomfortable meeting on a wet outdoor seat. I’ll make that decision tomorrow.

Weather Permits

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

The weather tonight will be hot and muggy, but clear, perfect for an outdoor meeting. Even though the forecast is for 71 degrees, given how the NWS has underestimated the temperatures in the lat few days, it might be at least 75 degrees.

Don’t forget to bring insect repellent!

Weather Permits

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

The weather forecast for this evening shows a temperature of 68 degrees, and a wind speed of about seven MPH. Even though there’s a slight chance of rain early on today, the sky should be clear.

Because of this, I’d say that weather permits for the meeting tonite. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone!

For me, at least, it does. The weather should be clear with 6 MPH winds, and a temperature of 64 degrees. The wind plus the temp will make it feel like 60 so wear a sweater or jacket.

I look forward to the first meeting, even if I’m the only one there!

Weather Report For First Meeting

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

The first meeting of the Weather Permitting group will be this coming Saturday night, April 4th, at 10 PM.

Even though SSI will be having an eighty to ninety chance of rain through Friday morning, things will begin to improve Friday night, and Saturday looks very nice.

At this time, I see nothing in the way of bad weather that could stop the meeting.

Update to the Gezebo pages, Ghost Walks

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

I have been informed by an employee of the St. Simons Lighthouse that one of the scheduled Ghost Walk tours abuts the start time for the Weather Permitting meetings.

They have asked me to post a notice to this effect, so I have added this to the Weather Permitting home page:

Note: Please respect the patrons of the Lighthouse Ghost Tours . They gather at the Gazebo at 9:00 PM on Saturday nights, and will clear the Gazebo by 9:45 PM. If you arrive early, be quietly patient and wait for the tour patrons to leave before entering.

In other words, don’t disturb the patrons! If there are any complaints, we might lose the use of the Gazebo. If you arrive early, please be patient and wait quietly for them to leave.

Weather Permitting

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

I have made the plunge: announcing the Weather Permitting group at a meeting. The meetings will start on Saturday, April 4th, at 10 PM. To support that effort, I have started a new web page that will eventually show the what and where of the meeting.

Here is the link:

A Pool Of Light…

It’s not finished yet, but will be by April 4th.

Look back here once in a while for news and updates of the meetings, and I look forward to seeing you.
